I took a photo of the morning rush hour at Seibu's Ikebukuro Station. Seibu's Ikebukuro Station is a dead-end terminal with a structure of 4 tracks + 2 electric storage tracks. There are passenger platforms 1 to 7 + express platforms. During rush hour, trains arrive one after another and turn around quickly. The track layout has been designed to reduce competition between departures and arrivals. However, it is inevitable that the flow of departing trains and the flow of arriving trains will cross. There was also a scene where an arriving train was waiting for a signal just before Ikebukuro Station. Ikebukuro Station is one of Japan's leading terminals and a huge station that ranks third in the number of passengers. (By the way, Shinjuku Station ranks first in the number of passengers, and Shibuya Station ranks second.) The average number of passengers per day at Seibu Railway's Ikebukuro Station is about 330,000 (2020 fiscal year). (It was about 480,000 in 2019 before the spread of the infection.) Although telework and telecommuting are on the rise these days, the morning rush hour continues. It's hectic as trains arrive one after the other on four tracks. The points are switched busily. There are also scenes where trains pass each other closely, which is worth watching (even if you know they won't collide, it's still nerve-wracking). The photo was taken on a weekday morning. I didn't photograph all the trains, but I think you can see how busy they are departing and arriving. A long time ago, freight trains also operated on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line, and the JNR tracks and Seibu Ikebukuro Line tracks were connected at Ikebukuro Station. In 1976, a connecting line was opened between Shin-Akatsu and Akitsu, and freight car relays at Ikebukuro Station and Kokubunji Station came to an end.
