The number of hours spent in traffic jams in Switzerland has doubled in the last ten years. The avalanche of cars will probably continue to grow in the future. But what can be done? How can traffic jams be avoided? Tobias Müller is conducting an experiment to try to find out how traffic jams arise – and what can be done about them. ???? What is the ideal speed on the motorway and what technological aids can be used to make traffic flow more smoothly in the future? Tobias Müller is trying to find out this in an experiment together with Einstein viewers. A good dozen drivers drive in circles for minutes on the TCS test site in Derendingen – and experience first-hand how traffic jams arise out of nowhere. So-called phantom traffic jams. Then they repeat the experiment, only this time with driver assistance systems switched on. The result: traffic suddenly runs much more smoothly. The guardians of Swiss traffic In the ASTRA traffic management center in Emmenbrücke, everything revolves around keeping traffic flowing. The operators sit in front of their screens around the clock and monitor the Swiss national road network. As soon as things start to come to a standstill, they react with traffic reports, diversions and so-called speed harmonisations. Because nothing helps against traffic jams when traffic volumes are high like 80 km/h. The Gotthard bottleneck Those responsible are also fighting against traffic collapse on the Gotthard. On public holidays and during the summer holiday months, traffic jams stretching for kilometres are practically inevitable. This presents the Uri cantonal police with an almost impossible task. They are trying to keep the avalanche of metal moving with a drop counter and entry and exit controls. Because many people unfamiliar with the area blindly trust their navigation devices, the traffic jam regularly spills over from the motorway onto side roads. A major problem for the narrow Uri region. The future of traffic jams Traffic jams will probably continue to exist in the future. Automated, partially autonomous vehicles could at least alleviate the problem. Various research results show that if just one in ten vehicles is equipped with sophisticated driver assistance systems, this has a dampening effect on so-called phantom traffic jams. However, it is not certain that traffic jams will soon be a thing of the past. Quite the opposite. Because there may be more empty journeys in the future, traffic jams may even increase. ????
