The lecture by Dr. Jacek Wysocki – archaeologist, employee of the Warmia and Mazury Spatial Planning Office, author of the publication “Regional Diversification of Rural Construction in Warmia and Mazury” was delivered at the regional conference “Rzecz o dzieje na wsi” in Kamionka near Nidzica, June 2, 2012. [26 min] We often look at the architecture of Warmia and Mazury through the prism of red-tiled roofs and brick houses. However, the issue itself is much more complex and diverse. Today, within the borders of the Warmia and Mazury province, we can distinguish six historical regions, and in each of them we deal with slightly different architecture. In the province, we can distinguish: Powiśle, Ziemia Lubawska, Warmia, Mazury, Barcja, Mazowsze (Poborze). The consequence of this state of affairs is a great diversity of residential, farm, public utility buildings, etc. Initially, the basic building material in the region was wood, then, as access to the raw material became increasingly difficult, houses began to be built of brick and stone. Stone, as a building material, was initially used only for the construction of livestock buildings. It was reluctantly used because it was a "cold" material and difficult to process. In the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, 10 rural types can be distinguished. The oldest are oval and single-manor layouts. The latter are solitary farms, which appeared in this area at the beginning of the Middle Ages. At the end of the 19th century, along with the division of land, colonial buildings appeared. In this area, there is also the construction of ethnic groups - you can find examples of Dutch settlement dating back to the 16th century. The lecture was delivered during the regional conference "Rzecz o pierwszy na wsi" in Kamionka near Nidzica, June 2012. The meeting was organized by the Rural Development Foundation, the Nidzica Development Foundation NIDA, the Local Government of the Warmia-Masuria Province with the support and funding of the Regional Secretariat of the National Rural Network and the Warmia-Masuria Spatial Planning Office.
