Calatheas or Marantas #Calatheas or #Marantas are herbaceous plants belonging to the Marantaceae family, native to tropical America, perennial, rhizomatous and very ornamental. The genus comprises more than 150 species, many of which are “doubly” classified botanically as Calathea and Maranta. Leaves come in many shapes and sizes and can be: velvety, hairy, smooth, rigid, wrinkled with several different shades, with the summer leaves having strong and vibrant colors! The flowers are normally of no ornamental importance. They appear in spring-summer. They are plants suitable for shaded areas with some humidity, which makes them ideal for filling empty spaces under taller plants. Used to decorate gardens isolated or in groups forming clumps; as borders along paths; bordering flower beds; as ground cover and they also grow well in pots. Care for Calatheas or Marantas Climate: Tropical, Subtropical, Equatorial. Plants very sensitive to direct sunlight, but need at least 2-3 hours of “indirect light” per day. Direct sunlight causes the leaves to curl and burn. Grown in fertile soil, rich in organic matter and drained, there is a video on the channel about the substrate I use! Watering should be regular, keeping the soil slightly moist, but does not tolerate waterlogged soil. Needs high air humidity, when the weather is hot and dry, spray water on the leaves. Most varieties of Calathea fold slightly at night, revealing the color of the underside of their leaves. To clean the leaves, use a damp cloth or wash with running water. Fertilize during spring-summer with preferably natural and organic fertilizer. Always water first before fertilizing to avoid burning the roots.
