Tokyo, the largest city in the world, wants to give itself a new urban culture. It is returning to urban traditions and building techniques of small towns. A new balance between megacity and small-scale garden city is to be created. Tokyo's architects are the driving force. They want to create a new urban culture with revolutionary ideas. Tokyo is the largest city in the world, a megacity without order. Japan's capital has not grown slowly in concentric circles, but explosively quickly. 38 million people now live in the greater metropolitan area. Nowhere else in the world do so many people commute to work every day. The three busiest train stations in the world are located here, and they are the hubs for millions of commuters. For decades, the world has admired the megacity's infrastructure and the discipline of its citizens. In fact, however, Tokyo has long since reached its limits. This urban cosmos cannot grow any further. There is not enough space. The city can no longer accommodate so many people. Tokyo will "die" if it does not change. People are no longer having children, urban progress is turning against its inhabitants. How can an urban universe like Tokyo reinvent itself? How can this oversized urban heart change, the city that has never stopped switching back and forth between ultra-modernity and tradition, between megacity and small town? How can a city be rebuilt while it is still in operation? And what does urban culture for the 21st century actually look like? In many places in the city, Tokyo's architects and designers are showing how the narrowness and lack of space can give rise to a new culture of living. How a return to traditional materials and building forms can become the heart of a new city - a city for people.
