In their interview in the eighth episode of the “Witness to the Era” program, Ahmed Mansour and former Iraqi intelligence chief Fadhil al-Azzawi discuss the reasons for Britain’s incitement against the Iraqi regime, and the relationship between the execution of the British spy of Iranian origin Farzad Bazoft. Saddam Hussein ordered the execution of Bazoft, a correspondent for the British Observer newspaper, who entered Baghdad at the invitation of the Iraqi government to cover the Kurdistan Legislative Council elections, following a quick trial that lasted only one day, after he was arrested at Baghdad airport, with photos and samples from the site of an explosion in the military industrial complex near Baghdad on September 19, 1989. Outraged by Bazoft’s execution, on March 15, 1990, Britain recalled its ambassador to Baghdad and cancelled ministerial visits. The case also sparked a wave of widespread anger in Western countries against Saddam, and contributed to the isolation of his regime. Following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990, the British Prime Minister at the time, Margaret Thatcher, incited and persuaded US President George Bush Sr. to intervene militarily against Iraq, and described Saddam with an inappropriate term.
