In the 1600s, a family that immigrated from England to New England, namely America, is exiled because of the family's father's "extreme Christian" attitudes and the discomfort these attitudes cause to the society they live in. The exiled family tries to rebuild a life for themselves far away, on the edge of a forest. However, this is not possible. The family slowly begins to disappear, first because of its internal relationships and tensions, and then because of external threats. Eventually, the father of the family thinks that God is punishing him for "getting carried away by pride" and asks for forgiveness.
