<Anchor> Today (the 19th), three researchers died at the Hyundai Motor Company Ulsan plant. They appear to have suffocated while performing a vehicle driving test in a confined space, and the police and fire department are investigating the exact cause of the accident. UBC reporter Heo Jun-won covered the story. <Reporter> At around 3:10 PM today, three researchers suffocated at the Hyundai Motor Company's Electric Quality Division in Buk-gu, Ulsan. Two researchers in their 30s and 40s from the Namyang Research Institute and one in their 20s from a partner company were found unconscious and collapsed inside a vehicle in a test chamber by another employee and reported the incident. The three were taken to a nearby hospital, but all died. [Ulsan Fire Department official: It is presumed that the suffocation occurred when exhaust gas entered the vehicle... They were found in cardiac arrest, and CPR was performed on them before they were all taken to the hospital.] It is presumed that the accident occurred when exhaust gas entered the vehicle, but there is also the possibility that nitrogen entered. [Official from the Hyundai Motor Company branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union: It doesn't seem like they died because exhaust gas entered, but I'm hearing that nitrogen now seeped in and killed them.] The 'chamber' where they were working is a sealed space where various environments can be artificially created to test the quality and performance of the vehicle's electrification. At the time, the workers were riding in the vehicle in this space called the environmental chamber and conducting tests when the accident reportedly occurred during this process. The Ulsan Employment and Labor Office has issued a work stoppage order for the process where the accident occurred, and the company has announced that it will actively cooperate with follow-up measures such as identifying the cause of the accident and preventing a recurrence. The police and fire authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident with company officials and others.
