At the end of August 2024, there was a massive fish kill at the weir of a hydroelectric power plant on the Lenne in Werdohl-Wintersohl, caused by a company that had been commissioned by the hydroelectric plant operator to carry out repair work on the weir. Thousands upon thousands of fish were killed. The weir was abruptly opened completely for the repair work. The water above the weir fell so quickly that countless fish ended up on dry land and died miserably, including species that are worthy of protection under the FFH, such as the brook lamprey and the eel, which is threatened throughout Europe. This example shows that hydroelectric power plants are not only directly harmful to fish, as the animals get into the turbines through the grate and are killed or injured in large numbers. The Arnsberg district government has filed a criminal complaint with the Dortmund public prosecutor's office against the company commissioned by the hydroelectric plant operator, for violating Section 17 of the Animal Welfare Act, the killing of vertebrates without reasonable cause. The brook lamprey, a species listed in the FFH, and the eel, which is endangered throughout Europe, were also affected. We now assume that the perpetrator will be convicted and will have to pay compensation. The Lennetal fishing clubs' interest group can then begin to rebuild the fish population. With such massive damage, this will take some time.
