The Lastarria neighborhood is a vibrant cultural, gastronomic, local and touristic neighborhood that has been a typical area of Santiago de Chile since 1996, so without further ado, let's get to know what this iconic neighborhood is like now, let's begin. In the heart of Santiago is one of the most emblematic places in the Chilean capital: the charming Lastarria neighborhood. Located between the Alameda, Merced Street and Avenida Victoria Subercaseux, the neighborhood has managed to preserve its historical and architectural heritage, revitalized with a rich cultural, gastronomic and hotel offering that has positioned it as an attractive tourist destination, being one of the favorites for both locals and travelers who visit it every year. This corner of the city has witnessed multiple transformations over time. Its origins date back to the time of the Conquest of Chile, when it was a set of farms and plots, where a mill operated and wine was produced, among other agricultural activities. It was in 1857, with the construction of the Church of the Veracruz, present to this day, that its development as a proper neighborhood began. If you are enjoying this video, I ask you to like it and if you value my content you can also contribute if you wish with a super thank you. In 2018 it was considered one of the "coolest neighborhoods in the world" by the travel section of the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia and that is due to the various characteristics of the neighborhood such as; cafes, outstanding restaurants, an interesting hotel offer, theaters, bookstores, cinema, museums and shops. The Church of the Veracruz is one of the heritage icons of the Lastarria Neighborhood. Its construction spanned the years 1852 and 1857. It reopened its doors in June of this year. After being burned down during the social unrest, specifically on November 12, 2019. The greatest damage was to the front and inside, where stucco walls, furniture, paintings, sculptures and decorative elements were burned. It was declared a Historical Monument in 1983 for its historical and architectural value. Cine el Biógrafo is a traditional neighborhood establishment, it opened its doors in 1987 as an initiative of 22 Chilean production companies to have a space dedicated exclusively to national cinema. Despite the initial difficulties, the cinema remained standing and in 1993 it was acquired by the current owners, who completely renovated it to give it a modern touch and equip it with the latest technology. Since then, Cine El Biógrafo has established itself as a benchmark for art cinema and European cinema. The Museum of Visual Arts (MAVI) is a cultural space in the neighborhood dedicated to promoting art and culture. Founded in 2001, this museum has a permanent collection of Chilean art, as well as a wide range of temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. In addition, the MAVI offers a wide variety of workshops and cultural activities for all ages, such as talks, guided tours and art workshops. The Plaza Mulato Gil de Castro This public space located at the entrance of the MAVI museum pays tribute to the renowned Lima painter José Gil de Castro, who had his residence and workshop in this neighborhood during the 19th century. The current design of the plaza was carried out by architects Ignacio Cruz and Walter Biggemman, who maintained the original architectural lines. It is an attractive point of reference where you can find a café and restaurant as well as the popular Antiques Fair, which is a tradition in the Lastarria neighborhood. You can get to the neighborhood by the Universidad Católica Metro stations on Line 1 and Bellas Artes on Line 5, as well as the Baquedano station that belongs to both lines. It is also possible to get there by Red Metropolitana de Movilidad buses that run mainly along Alameda and get off at PA42-Parada 4 metro Universidad Católica. There is no doubt that visiting the Lastarria Neighborhood is an excellent idea if you come to Santiago. It is also part of the identity of the people of Santiago and its charm is obvious.
