The World Wide Web, once a symbol of hope and freedom, has 35 years later grown into a web of commercial interests, dependency and disinformation. A number of large tech companies determine what we see and do, while democracy and autonomy are under pressure. VPRO Tegenlicht investigates how it got this far and how we can make the internet belong to everyone again. There are increasing voices worldwide - remarkably among many young people - to break the monopoly of Big Tech and create an internet that belongs to and is for everyone. A digital space that we can influence ourselves, where we determine what we see and what we do. In this episode, Tegenlicht investigates the future of the internet, 'the digital space' that brought about the World Wide Web and that now determines our lives to a great extent. Search engines, mail, social media, mobile phones, apps, all digital systems, augmented reality, artificial intelligence: nothing works without the internet. Hospitals are closed, travel is no longer possible, banks - and therefore your accounts - are inaccessible and you lose contact with everything and everyone around you. The internet is our life and at the same time we don't care about it. If the internet is a basic need, why do we let it be controlled by a select group of companies? Tegenlicht speaks with pioneers and innovators who are committed to a better, healthier internet that takes our human rights into account. director: Floor van der Meulen research: Chris Vijn camera: Olaf Schuur, Remco Bikkers, Hans Bouma sound: Mark Witte, Bente van der Spek, Diego van Uden, Lily van Leeuwen, Jillis Schriel, Greg Miller, Daan Arens editing: Jouke Dubel dramaturge: Jurjen Blick image research: Paula Witkamp, Barbara Kist design: Fien Leeflang production: Marie Schutgens production assistant: Amber Wilmsen executive producer: Elleke Claessen final editing: Julia Veldman © VPRO 2025 More stories?
