Temperature measurement was something that scientists researched a lot from the 17th century onwards. After Galileo Galilei invented the air thermoscope in 1631, these devices became increasingly sophisticated and accurate. Until the emergence of modern digital thermometers, the most widely used were mercury thermometers. These instruments are based on the expansion of a certain amount of mercury contained in a glass container (bulb) connected to a tube with a very small diameter. Mercury was chosen because it is a liquid that expands regularly. When the temperature of the thermometer increases, the mercury molecules increase their agitation, causing it to expand, filling the capillary tube. A temperature is associated with each height reached by the mercury. The use of the thermometer to measure temperature is based on the fact that, after some time in contact, the system and the thermometer reach the same temperature, that is, they reach thermal equilibrium.
