Dr. Holger Kraus How to evaluate your pond Presentation from the NaturaGart meeting 2017, part 1 https://www.naturagart.de At the 2017 pond and garden fair at NaturaGart, the focus was on evaluating pond problems. Dr. Holger Kraus, zoological director of the NaturaGart Park, gave a presentation on the importance of water values for pond biology. He explained that the idea of a perfect pond often deviates from the natural development of a body of water. A pond tends to accumulate sediment and nutrients, which in the long term leads to a process of silting up. Dr. Kraus emphasized that one should control the nutrient supply and regularly monitor the water quality in order to keep the pond in a healthy condition. In the second part of the presentation, Dr. Kraus used four examples to show how to assess the condition of a pond. He explained the importance of water chemistry, nutrient values and sediment accumulation. Regularly checking the water values and careful documentation help to identify and resolve problems early on. Dr. Kraus advised testing not only the pond water, but also the filling water used to identify undesirable nutrients and minimize their entry into the pond.
