In February, Zembla revealed in 'The Waste Dump by Rijkswaterstaat' that the top of Rijkswaterstaat pressured its own permit issuers to allow the dumping of 750,000 tons of granulate, a waste product from the asphalt industry, in the natural lake Over de Maas. The broadcast led to parliamentary questions, parliamentary debates and new investigations. In early September, Zembla revealed that Rijkswaterstaat had also made a crucial calculation error in a risk assessment of the granulate dump. The actual level of poison that could end up in the lake through the dump turned out to be a thousand times higher than calculated.
