1 Samuel 17:1 The Philistines gathered together their troops for war, and gathered together in Socoh, which is in Judah, and camped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephesdamim. 2 But Saul and the men of Israel gathered together, and camped in the valley of Elah, and there they arrayed themselves in battle against the Philistines. 3 These were on a mountain on the other side, and the Israelites on another mountain on the other side; and, between them, the valley. 4 Then there came out of the camp of the Philistines a man of war, whose name was Goliath, from Gath, six cubits and a span high. 5 He had on his head a helmet of bronze and was wearing a breastplate of scales weighing five thousand shekels of bronze. 6 He carried bronze greaves on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders. 7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's shaft, and the tip of his spear was made of six hundred shekels of iron; and before him went the squire. 8 He stopped and called out to the troops of Israel and said to them: Why do you go out and form yourselves in line of battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you, Saul's servants? Choose a man from among you who will go down against me. 9 If he can fight with me and hurt me, we will be your servants; but if I overcome you and strike you, then you will be our servants and will serve us. 10 And the Philistine said, Today I confront the troops of Israel. Give me a man, that we may both fight. 11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were astonished and greatly feared. David sent to his brothers 12 David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah whose name was Jesse, who had eight sons; In the days of Saul he was old and advanced in years among men. 13 The three eldest sons of Jesse presented themselves to Saul and followed him to war; They were called: Eliab, the firstborn, the second, Abinadab, and the third, Shammah. 14 David was the youngest; only the three oldest followed Saul. 15 But David went to Saul and returned to feed his father's sheep in Bethlehem. 16 So the Philistine came in the morning and in the afternoon; and performed for forty days. 17 Jesse said to David his son: Take, I pray you, for your brothers an ephah of this parched wheat and these ten loaves of bread, and run and take them to your brothers' camp. 18 But these ten cheeses, take them to the commander of a thousand; and you will visit your brothers to see if they are doing well; and you will bring proof of how they pass. 19 Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel are in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. 20 So David got up early the next day, left the sheep with a guard, loaded himself, and set out, as Jesse had commanded him; and arrived at the camp when the troops were already forming up in battle order and, shouting, calling for battle. 21 The Israelites and Philistines arrayed themselves in order, row by row. 22 David, leaving what he had brought in the care of the baggage keeper, ran into battle; and when he arrived, he asked his brothers if they were well. 23 While David was still speaking with them, behold, a duelist came up from the army of the Philistines, whose name was Goliath, the Philistine of Gath; and he spoke the same things that he had spoken before, and David heard him. 24 When all the Israelites saw the man, they fled from before him, and were greatly afraid, 25 and said to one another: Did you see that man who came up? For he went up to defy Israel. Whoever kills him, the king will shower him with great riches, and will give him his daughter as a wife, and will exempt her father's house from taxes in Israel. 26 Then David spoke to the men who were with him, saying, What will they do to that man who strikes this Philistine and takes away the shame from Israel? Who then is this uncircumcised Philistine, to defy the armies of the living God? 27 And the people repeated the same words to him, saying: Thus will they do to the man who strikes him. 28 When Eliab, his elder brother, heard him speaking to the men, his anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why have you come down here? And to whom did you leave those few sheep in the desert? I well know your presumption and your wickedness; you came down just to watch the fight. 29 David answered, What have I done now? I only asked one question. 30 He turned from him to another and said the same thing; and the people responded to him again as before.
