The UNICA quarry is the geotope of the month of May 2022. The special thing about this geotope is the fact that a 380 million year old reef body has been preserved in the rock here. This means that a unique window into the geological past has been preserved. The quarry wall was elaborately prepared a few years ago. Over a length of 15 m and a height of 6 m, guests are given a unique insight into a stromatoporoid reef. "This unique selling point was the decisive factor for its inclusion in the list of the 30 most beautiful places. In combination with the neighboring Lahn Marble Museum, the UNICA quarry is a worthwhile excursion destination. The history of the raw material "Lahn marble", which has achieved worldwide fame, is another interesting aspect related to the quarry," explains the project manager. To create the 3D model, the quarry was flown over and surveyed with drones in September 2020. The 3D model was calculated from this data. A short film was created to present the geotope, which can also be found on the project website. The German Geological Society - Geological Association eV - DGGV is one of the oldest scientific organizations in Germany. On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the German Geological Society and its successor organizations in 2023, we have initiated the 30 Geotope³ project. The 30 Geotope³ project aims to document the most visually appealing and scientifically significant outcrops in Germany. The focus is on digital and three-dimensional recording. The outcrops are georeferenced using cameras (including drones and 360-degree cameras), laser scanners and d-GPS. The individual locations have been presented monthly since February 2021 on the project website https://www.digitalgeology.de All data recorded as part of the project will be made freely accessible. The project involves many geoscientific institutions, such as geoparks, state geological offices and universities, and is therefore site-independent. _______________________________________________________________________________________ 0:00 Intro 0:14 Introduction 0:56 History 3:40 Geology 5:59 The Lahn Marble Museum 6:54 The 3D model 8:43 Outtakes Photo Empire State Building https://www.planet-wissen.de/technik/...
