On December 1, 1923, the Gleno Dam, in Val di Scalve, in the province of Bergamo, collapsed, causing a tragedy that shocked Italy. A mass of water, mud and debris poured into the valley, from 1,500 meters above sea level, overwhelming five villages and causing the death of over 350 people.
