According to the code of canon law, a heresy is the persistent denial, after receiving baptism, of a truth that must be believed with divine and Catholic faith, or the persistent doubt about it. It is not, as we see, the same as apostasy, which implies the total rejection of the Christian faith, or schism, which means ceasing to be subject to the Supreme Pontiff. For the church, heresy was always something very worrying because it was the prelude to schism and because, generally, it usually brought disorders. Heretics were not always meek and reasonable, often quite the opposite, hence, from early Christianity heretics and their doctrines were persecuted with great determination. Throughout the almost two thousand years of history of Christianity there have been hundreds of heresies. During the first centuries they were very common, then, with the conversion of the Emperor of Rome to Christianity, things calmed down, only to return with force a thousand years later, when the Lutheran heresy emerged, which would culminate in a great schism. But not all of them had the same fate. Most heresies were short-lived, which prevented them from constituting real threats to the Catholic Church, which was aware that a single heresy properly agitated could end the Church itself.
