Even today, the “Thirty Years’ War” is seen as a metaphor for one of the longest and bloodiest religious wars in history, which was also the first “European war” in the full sense of the word. In addition to the devastated landscapes of Germany, the European state order lay in ruins – and yet a groundbreaking peace order emerged from these ruins, which marked the beginning of a new era. In his lecture, Herfried Münkler will vividly describe the historical background and events and introduce the most important historical protagonists. In addition, he will shed light on the war in all its aspects and build a bridge to our present day. Because the Thirty Years’ War can help us understand today’s wars better than all later conflicts. Speaker: Prof. Dr. Herfried Münkler is Professor of Political Science at the Humboldt University of Berlin. In 2004/05 he was a visiting professor at the Social Science Research Center Berlin, and in 2001 he was an academy professor at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. He previously held a guest lectureship at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna (1993). He has participated in numerous research programs of the DFG, the VW and the Thyssen Foundation, led several working groups at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and has received numerous awards. Many of his books are now considered standard works, such as "The New Wars" (2002), "Empires" (2005) and "The Germans and their Myths" (2009), which was awarded the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in the same year. Most recently, the highly acclaimed publication "The Great War" (2013), the book "War Splinters. The Evolution of Violence in the 20th and 21st Centuries" (2015) and "The Thirty Years' War: European Catastrophe, German Trauma 1618-1648" (2017) were published.
