Justin Trudeau, a symbol of liberalism for the last decade, is resigning as Prime Minister of Canada. It is the end of an era, and perhaps even the collapse of a broader vision of the liberal world. Michał Płociński and Jędrzej Bielecki analyze the reasons for this resignation, its symbolic meaning, and the future of Canada against the background of changes in global politics. After almost a decade in power, Justin Trudeau announces his resignation. The reasons? A sharp decline in support, internal pressure from coalition partners, and symbolic humiliation during a meeting with Donald Trump, who publicly called Canada the "51st state of the USA." "Trudeau wanted to save Canada from a trade war with Trump, but his liberal ideals lost out to reality," notes Jędrzej Bielecki, a journalist in the foreign department of "Rzeczpospolita." Justin Trudeau's liberal experiment - why did it fail? Canada under Trudeau's rule has become a laboratory of multiculturalism and openness. The acceptance of hundreds of thousands of migrants, including Syrians and Ukrainians, and ambitious climate policy have clashed with rising inflation, high prices and a deepening sense of insecurity among Canadians. "Canada is a country without a strong identity, where the tensions between vision and reality are becoming increasingly clear," comments Bielecki. The current situation in Canada indicates the possibility of a political turnaround. Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservatives, is betting on radical changes: increased extraction of raw materials, a tightening of migration policy and greater integration of immigrants with Anglo-Saxon culture. Will Canada become more conservative and will Trudeau's liberal values be forgotten? Liberalism is losing throughout the West. The fall of Justin Trudeau is also a signal of changes throughout the West. "Canada, a symbol of openness and globalization, has shown that people are more interested in everyday living standards than idealistic visions," assesses Bielecki. Similar trends can be seen in the US, where Donald Trump is returning to the political scene, and in Europe, where populist movements are gaining strength. As Bielecki notes, Trudeau's decision coincided with Donald Trump's return to power. "This is a symbolic victory for Trump, who showed before his inauguration how to effectively undermine the ideas of liberalism," he adds. Is the end of the Trudeau era the final blow to liberalism? Will Canada cope with the new challenges? And what does this change mean for the rest of the world? Listen to learn more about the political turmoil overseas.
