The tavern (rebetiko) Music: Giorgos Mitsakis Lyrics: Giorgos Mitsakis Text by journalist Yiannis Papamihous: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The rebetiko song belongs to the elements of the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO Rebetiko music or rebetiko songs developed during the development of industrial society in Greece with the main centers being the large urban centers such as Smyrna, Constantinople, Piraeus, Ermoupolis and of course Thessaloniki. The period of appearance is defined from the late 1800s to 1955 when it was replaced by folk song and marginalized to reappear in the 70s initially and the 80s subsequently. The musical roots of rebetiko go back to Byzantine church music and the folk song of the Greek population of M. Asia and the Aegean islands, while there are also influences from Arabic musical rhythms. The dominant instruments of the first bands were the bouzouki, initially three-stringed and then six-stringed – with double strings – and the baglamas, while the accordion and the guitar played the role of accompanying instruments, while the first recordings on discs were made around 1930 in a more amateur expression and only in the 50s do we have the first professional productions from companies. In the following years, Thessaloniki was characterized as the great “embrace” of rebetiko! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Vocals: Mary Doska Guitar/Vocals: Paris Karagiannopoulos Guitar: Mike Koutziaris Sound Engineering: Kriton Kiourtsis & Tanya Jones Sound Editing: Track Terre Studios Video: Christina Gavra Production Assistant: Yannis Papalexis (John Words) Image Editing: Zoe Karathanasi
