In this video, I want to share a concern that has been bothering me a lot lately. I've lived in Norway for 5 years with my wife Johanna, who is Swedish, and our son Noah, who was born in Sweden but moved here with us when he was still a baby in 2019. Here at home, we have a really interesting mix of languages: we speak Portuguese, Norwegian and Swedish. As a father, I always make a point of speaking Portuguese with Noah, and he understands everything, but so far he doesn't speak any Portuguese. This has me a little worried. I will explain some reasons that may be behind this. First, the environment Noah is growing up in is quite linguistically challenging. With Norwegian predominant outside the home and Swedish being his mother's language, Portuguese ends up being at a disadvantage. Even though I try hard to keep Portuguese alive, it's hard to compete with the other two languages he hears and uses daily. Furthermore, children tend to prioritize languages that offer more opportunities for interaction with other people, and Portuguese has not been as present for them outside the home. I also talk about what I've been doing and my ideas to help Noah start speaking Portuguese, how to look for more interactions and activities that encourage him to use the language. I share my experiences here and, who knows, this may help other parents who are experiencing similar situations. ————————————————————- Hey, how about having a 100% digital global account with no opening fee?
