He was one of the great thinkers of the 17th and 18th centuries and is recognised as the "last universal genius", that is, the last person who was able to sufficiently train himself in all fields of knowledge; after that there were only specialists. He made profound and important contributions in the areas of metaphysics, epistemology, logic, philosophy of religion, as well as in mathematics, physics, geology, jurisprudence and history. Even Denis Diderot, the 18th-century French deist philosopher, whose views could not have been more in opposition to Leibniz's, could not help but be in awe of his achievements, writing in the Encyclopédie: “Perhaps there has never been a man who has read more, studied more, meditated more, and written more than Leibniz… What he has produced about the world, about God, nature, and the soul is of the most sublime eloquence. If his ideas had been expressed with Plato's flair, the philosopher of Leipzig would have yielded nothing to the philosopher of Athens.” #history #leibniz #calculus ????
