The Status of Imam Al-Bukhari and the Response to Contemporary Intellectual Oppositions Sheikh Saeed Al-Kamali Biography of Imam Al-Bukhari and his Comprehensive Book of Sahih Al-Hadith The Title of the Second Lesson by Sheikh Al-Kamali Amidst a Large Audience at Qatar University The second lesson by preacher Sheikh Saeed Al-Kamali began with a speech by Dr. Muhammad Abu Bakr Al-Muslih, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at the College of Sharia, in which he praised preacher Al-Kamali and how he abandoned tourist guidance to become a preacher to Allah and guide to divine knowledge, as he qualified for this by seeking knowledge in all Islamic cities, combining the modern and ancient approaches in studying Islamic sciences. After that, Sheikh Saeed Al-Kamali spoke about the topic of the episode, which is dedicated to the scholar and hadith scholar Imam Al-Bukhari, may Allah have mercy on him, who was known for his defense of the Prophetic Sunnah through his passion for the science of hadith and his distinction in it. He said that the talk of theologians in defense of Imam Al-Bukhari is a defense of a winning cause because Allah has guaranteed the preservation of religion. Al-Bukhari did a tremendous job in preserving the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, collecting them and verifying them. He spoke about the prohibition of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from writing down hadiths with a few exceptions. Then the lecturer discussed the history of writing Hadith during the reign of Omar bin Abdul Aziz, who wrote to his workers ordering them to write down the Hadith they had, and ordered Al-Zuhri to write down the Hadith, but the beginnings do not start in an organized and classified manner, so Al-Zuhri’s writing was not organized or classified, and during the middle of the second century AH, the works in the field of the Prophetic Hadith appeared in an organized and classified manner by men such as Imam Malik bin Anas, Abdullah bin Mubarak, and others who wrote Hadith. Then came the third century AH, in which Imam Al-Bukhari was one of its most famous people with all merit, as Al-Bukhari was the first to see the collection of only the Sahih. Therefore, the Sahih Collection, known as Sahih Al-Bukhari, is considered his most famous work and the most famous book of the Prophetic Hadith in general among the people of the Sunnah and the Community. He spent sixteen years classifying, arranging, and classifying it. Al-Bukhari said about the reason for classifying the book: “I was with Ishaq bin Rahawayh, and he said: If you compiled a brief book of the Sahih Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. That occurred to my heart, so I began to collect this book.” Al-Bukhari collected about 7593 hadiths in it, according to the count of Muhammad Fuad Abdul Baqi, which Imam Al-Bukhari chose from among six hundred thousand hadiths that he had memorized. He was meticulous in accepting narrations, and he stipulated specific and precise conditions for the narrator of the hadith, which are that he should be a contemporary of the one he was narrating from, and that he should hear the hadith from him, meaning that he stipulated seeing and hearing it together, in addition to the necessity of the narrator being trustworthy, just, precise, perfect, and pious. Historians have narrated that when Al-Bukhari finished compiling the book of Sahih, he presented it to a number of the greatest scholars of his time, such as Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ali ibn al-Madini, and Yahya ibn Ma'in, and they testified to the authenticity of the hadiths in it. It was narrated on the authority of Muslimah ibn Qasim, who said: “I heard someone say on the authority of Abu Ja'far al-'Uqayli, who said: When Al-Bukhari composed his book on the authentic hadiths, he presented it to Ali ibn al-Madini, Yahya ibn Ma'in, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and others, and they tested him, so he spoke to them and said to him: Your book is authentic except for four hadiths. Al-'Uqayli said: Al-Bukhari’s opinion on them is that they are authentic.” Then the nation accepted it after them as the most authentic book after the Holy Quran. Scholars turned to the book of Sahih al-Bukhari and paid great attention to it by explaining, commenting and studying it in many books. Muhammad Yusuf al-Banuri said: “It became like the sun in the middle of the sky, reaching the highest level of acceptance, glory and praise.
