Congratulations to this guardian who deserves our support and our gratitude. The trajectory of a farm is not always started by the one who first occupied the lands. The history of the Boa Esperança farm begins in the early 19th century, with the granting of land grants to the chief guardian João Francisco de Souza, who later sold it to Antônio Bernardino de Barros. He then decided to leave the lands in the back under the administration of his brother Gabriel José de Barros, which were given the name of São Miguel farm by its administrator. On the lands on the banks of the Rio Preto, Antônio Bernardino de Barros established the Três Ilhas farm. Antônio Bernardino de Barros, son of Captain José de Barros Monteiro and Dona Ana Thereza de Assumpção, married Dona Fausta Emerenciana de Moura, daughter of José Francisco de Moura and Antônia Joaquina de Oliveira, in 1813. This union produced many children who later became important figures in the economy and society of the Juiz de Fora region. Antônio Bernardino de Barros cleared forests, planted coffee, built a house, slave quarters and the entire structure for processing coffee and raising animals. In 1850, when the post-mortem inventory of Antônio Bernardino was opened, with his son Francisco Bernardino de Barros as the executor, the lands of the farms in the region were divided among his heirs, with Gabriel Antônio de Barros, the future Baron of São João Del Rey, inheriting the farm he named São Gabriel, and his brother José Bernardino de Barros, the future Baron of Três Ilhas, inheriting the Boa Esperança farm. The other brothers settled on land in the Miracema region, where they also founded some coffee farms. José Bernardino de Barros, known as a man of refined habits, began building the house with the most luxurious furnishings available at the time. At Antônio's request, Boa Esperança was raffled off among his children, and his daughter Ana Helena Monteiro de Barros thus became the owner of the farm. Coffee lost its heyday in the region, dairy cattle invaded the vast majority of coffee farms in the 19th century, but the lands remain to this day in the hands of one of the descendants of the Baron of Três Ilhas and the Baron of São João Del Rei, the brave preserver of his ancestors' assets, Mr. Maurício Antônio Monteiro de Barros.
