The story of 20-year-old Rafaela, who has been in a wheelchair for 12 years due to her quadriplegia, is shocking. It all started when he was 8 years old. Raphaela along with her father and sister visited a playground in Chania and there, as the 8-year-old Raphaela was playing on a trampoline, she hit her neck. "As if I was jumping, my head turned back and I hit my neck on the railing. Then I didn't feel very well and asked to go to the bathroom. I was late and my sister came to see what I was doing. My hands were paralyzed." "We called for help, they refused to call the ambulance, they didn't want to be involved in the accident. My father had to take me to the hospital in his car. By the time I went I was completely paralyzed." Rafaela was transferred to the hospital in Chania and then to the hospital in Heraklion. They didn't let anyone in the ambulance because they thought he would die on the way. Rafaela was in a coma for 10 days. Scans showed a fractured neck and doctors' prognosis was grim. "It was definitely shocking to come back. I wanted to do what all the other kids are doing," he said. In Crete she faced accessibility problems, while people's reactions made her feel like she was an alien. Now Rafaela is making her dream come true and is studying Biology at EKPA, while in the future she wants to do a master's degree in Neurobiology. Life in Athens is better, she says, but she still faces accessibility problems, for example in shops or public services, but she doesn't give up.
