Angkor Wat is a Buddhist holy site designated by UNESCO and the world's largest temple. After French scholar Henri Mouhot discovered it while exploring the Cambodian jungle in the mid-19th century, he hailed it as greater than any ruins left by Greece and Rome. It is located about 4 km north of Siem Reap, the capital of Siem Reap Province in Cambodia, and about 1.5 km south of Angkor Thom, the capital of the Khmer Empire. Angkor means dynasty in Khmer, and Wat means temple, so it is also called the temple of the dynasty. The height of the central sanctuary on the highest three floors is 65 m, and the stairs are very steep. The reason why this relic is great is not only its long history and magnificent scale, but also its highly sophisticated architectural techniques that are not lacking at all despite having been built on a large scale a long time ago. Also, as it has a history of being neglected by humans, vines and trees are growing through the walls of the temple, which clearly shows the process in which human architecture returns to nature, and contains the Buddhist message of the transience of civilization and the order of the universe in which humans and nature eventually come together over a large period of time. #AngkorWat #World'sLargestTemple #KhmerEmpire ▶️ Program: EBS Special Documentary - AngkorWat ▶️ Broadcast Date: 2011. 4.18
