On 15 January 1945, Max Manus and Roy Nilsen attached several bombs to the German ship Donau. The ship sank in Skiphelle in Drøbakk, there are still vehicles and remains from the sinking under water. This was a very successful sabotage operation carried out by the Oslo gang. Photographs of the Danube from private collection: Stian Fosland. It had a gross weight of 9,025 tonnes. During the Second World War, the Danube was requisitioned, among other things, for the transport of German troops and material to and from Norway. On 26 November 1942, the ship transported 529 Norwegian Jews to Germany in connection with the Holocaust. Of these, only nine returned. The Danube was also used in connection with the student deportations in 1943 and 1944. The Danube was sunk on 16 January 1945 outside Drøbak after Max Manus and Roy Nielsen had placed ten timed explosive charges (limpets) under the ship's waterline while it was docked in Oslo. The ship was set ashore and remained with the bow in the air and more than half the hull under water until it was raised and cut up in 1952. Clarification: Donau was at Utstikker 1 in Oslo harbor when the sabotage operation was carried out. This is a former wharf on the east side of Vippetangen, which has now been cleaned up and the area filled in. Outpost 1 was the furthest north of the three outposts here. The quay was demolished in 1981, now a large part of the area here is used as a parking lot for Danmarksbåtene. In the video, it is said that the Danube was approximately where the Danish boat is. It is specified that this is roughly where outcrop 2 is today, about 100 meters south of the Danish boat. Sources: Store Norwegian Lexicon. War diary, Norway 1940-1945. Memorial plaque at Skiphelle.
