In May 2024, the SL Yamaguchi returned for the first time in two years. Announcer Ryo Takahashi of the KRY Railway Department, who is also a railway fan, interviewed the young mechanics who support its operation. On the first day of operation, many railway fans flocked to the depot at Shin-Yamaguchi Station, where a D51 was being maintained. Announcer Takahashi was amazed by its power as the smell of burning coal wafted through the air. The 86-year-old D51 requires unique maintenance, and the lighting is also powered by steam. The system that uses sand to prevent the train from spinning in preparation for the steep uphill slope on the Yamaguchi Line was also introduced. Mechanic Shingo Harada (23) said, "It's a very rewarding job," and Daichi Fukuba (26) talked about the harshness and sense of accomplishment, saying, "My job is to keep the fire going until morning."
