The Ottoman Empire The Ottoman Empire reached the peak of its glory and power during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; its lands extended to include large parts of the three continents of the Old World: Europe, Asia and Africa; where all of Asia Minor, large parts of southeastern Europe, western Asia and northern Africa were subject to it. The number of Ottoman states reached 29 states, and the state had nominal sovereignty over a number of neighboring countries and emirates in Europe, some of which became an actual part of the state over time, while others gained a kind of autonomy. When the Ottomans annexed the Levant, Egypt and the Hejaz in 1517 AD, and overthrew the Mamluk state after it had grown old and its power had declined, the last Abbasid caliph, Muhammad al-Mutawakkil, who resided in Cairo, abdicated the caliphate in favor of Sultan Selim I, and since then the sultans of the House of Osman have become caliphs of the Muslims.
