One of the most significant highlights in Germany is the Nördlinger Ries, which of course cannot be missing from the 30 Geotope³ series! About 15 million years ago, an asteroid over a kilometer in size collided with the earth and hit what is now southern Germany. A 25-kilometer-wide crater was created, which is still preserved today: the Nördlinger Ries. One of the most spectacular outcrops is the Aumühle quarry, our newest geotope in the 30 Geotope³ series. On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the German Geological Society and its successor organizations in 2023, we have initiated the 30 Geotope³ project. The 30 Geotope³ project aims to document the most visually appealing and scientifically significant outcrops in Germany. The focus is on digital and three-dimensional recording. The outcrops are georeferenced using cameras (including drones and 360-degree cameras), laser scanners and d-GPS. The individual locations have been presented monthly since February 2021 on the project website https://www.digitalgeology.de All data recorded as part of the project are made freely available.
