In a desert oasis lived a man who had nothing. One evening, a camel offered to take him to the town of Topka, on the other side of the desert. The man settled there, worked and got married. He forgot the camel that was waiting for him. Having become rich and old, the man felt alone. Nostalgia for his oasis took over... One of my favorite tales! It is always a great pleasure to share it with teenagers and get their reactions. A tale of wisdom that can also be read from the age of 8, since it is published in the great Petite Poche collection by Thierry Magnier. With an economy of words, remarkable as always, the great Mourlevat has crafted a story elegantly tinged with the supernatural, poetry and philosophy, all in an oriental atmosphere. In twenty minutes of reading, the author offers the opportunity to reflect on the illusory happiness that non-essential material possessions and work are supposed to bring us. Do we really give meaning to our lives by materially building our happiness? Do we have to give meaning to our lives to feel the intoxication of being "alive"? Don't all these questions, shaped by the mythology of our civilization, become luxurious when we are in a survival situation?
