In the 1970s, a group of activists, encouraged by the historical discovery of the date of Zumbi dos Palmares' death, celebrated Black Consciousness Day for the first time on November 20. The trajectory of the leader of the Palmares quilombo inspired the creation of a moment to remember the fight against racism in Brazil. Officially, the date would only be included in the country's calendar in 2011. The delay seems almost ironic, given the historical slowness of the real inclusion of black people in Brazil.
