In the last 30 years, the European Union, mainly to suppress overfishing but also to renew the fishing fleet, subsidizes coastal fishermen for the destruction of their traditional professional boats, the filing of their fishing license or their use for other purposes mainly in tourism. Until now, the measure seems to have had significant absorption, because it offers a significant financial amount to fishermen. VICE tracked down one of the oldest traditional boat hulls in Skyros, spoke with the family that owns it, and followed it on its last summer of fishing just before the boat's final destruction by bulldozers. Greece is considered the country that proportionally has the most fishing boats in all of Europe, of which at least 80% are wooden. Greek boats are the inheritors of a centuries-old manufacturing tradition and culture in the Mediterranean, passed down from generation to generation orally and through the experiential apprenticeship of the younger ones next to a craftsman. Each of these hulls is unique and irreplaceable, however in recent years they have been bulldozed and ended up in landfills. After failed attempts to rescue them, of the approximately 17,500 hulls estimated to exist in our country, 12,500 have been destroyed in the last 20 years, while by the end of 2018 it is estimated that approximately 770 vessels were destroyed, while approximately 17 wooden fishing vessels were rescued by the Greek state trough. The cultural value of these boats is important as they are creations of traditional shipbuilding and that is why, as the people trying to save them say, it is important to take action and protect them. Through our journey with the boat of the Psariotis family for a last summer in Skyros, we learn the history of the destruction of the boats and say goodbye to a part of Greek tradition that is lost forever.
