Imagine standing in the heart of Pyongyang, North Korea, looking at the massive, pyramid-shaped Ryugyong Hotel, also known as the Judgment Hotel. This is one of the largest and most enigmatic abandoned buildings in the world, and it describes the state of the country well. The construction project began in 1987, when North Korean leader Kim Il-sung wanted to build the world's tallest hotel, which would symbolize the country's technological and economic power. The 330-meter-high hotel, which would have 3,000 rooms and several revolving restaurants, was supposed to be completed in 1989 for the World Festival of Youth and Students. The beginning of the construction work went as planned, but the poor quality of the materials and financial constraints slowed down the work. By 1989, the hotel was far from complete. The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 led to an economic crisis in North Korea, which halted construction of the hotel in 1992. The building remained an unfinished concrete frame, symbolizing the country's economic difficulties. In the 1990s, North Korea struggled with famine and economic crisis, which made it difficult to complete the hotel. In 2008, the hotel project was brought back to life in cooperation with the Egyptian Orascom Group, which finished the exterior of the hotel with a modern glass panel. This gave the building a new, modern look. In 2012, the German luxury hotel chain Kempinski announced its intention to start managing the hotel, but political tensions and financial sanctions prevented the plans from coming to fruition. Although the Ryugyong Hotel has never received guests, it serves as a significant symbol of the North Korean government. In 2018, more than 100,000 LED lights were installed on its facade, which allow various images and political slogans to be displayed, making the hotel a huge propaganda tool. The future of the hotel is still uncertain, as its opening would require significant investments and changes in the country's politics. The Ryugyong Hotel serves as a cautionary example of how vast resources can be wasted on projects that are never completed or meet their original goals.
