Laas in South Tyrol owes its name "marble village" and its fame beyond the country's borders to the "white gold". An inclined elevator, a kind of funicular railway, was used to transport the marble that is mined above the village. The marble was first transported to the valley station using the inclined elevator, which existed until September 2019. From there, the transport continued with diesel-electric locomotives on meter gauge. The locomotives were built at Brown Boverie in Milan. Our filmmaker Hans Stumpf visited the unique railway in April 2016 and documented the now historic operation. #trains #modelmaking #grimm #weinheim
