When we detect structures in deep space that shouldn’t even exist on paper, who’s wrong? The universe or our theories? For two years, the James Webb telescope has been using its infrared vision to study the most distant and oldest structures in the cosmos. It has shown us time and again that the real outgrowths of the universe are not particularly interesting to our models—and that their very existence throws established cosmology into chaos! For example, experts still can’t explain how galaxies as large and massive as our Milky Way could have existed just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang.
