Everyone on the North Sea island of Pellworm knows him: Sönke Petersen, the tireless island mechanic who fights against broken cutter engines, defective milking machines and competition from the mainland every day. 16-hour days are not uncommon for him and his workshop team. Landing new orders every day on a North Sea island with 1,200 inhabitants is Sönke's challenge. The large workshops on the mainland often make cheaper offers than he does. The island mechanic has to counteract this every day. Four permanent employees, his wife Lena and their two children Jonna and Jonte, make a living from his small workshop. Sönke took out a large loan a few years ago to build the new workshop. This has to be paid off monthly. In addition, his storage costs are higher than on the mainland because of the island location. He has to have every part that can break in stock for his island customers. Sönke can still keep the competition from the mainland at bay. By being on call on the island at all times, he can get to his customers faster than the competition. The master agricultural machinery mechanic is also known on the North Sea island as a technical problem solver. Repairing broken agricultural machinery is Sönke's great passion. And he almost always finds the fault. His most important tool is no longer the wrench, but the PC. Troubleshooting the engine or electronics is almost exclusively done using computer programs. Sönke trained his two journeymen himself. One of them completed his apprenticeship as the best in the state.
