Could we recover the Gorgon as an image of philosophy? In what sense? Does philosophy have anything to do with terror, horror and monsters? If we accept that the images that appear represented on the shields provide important elements to understand Greek culture, as Dana LaCourse Munteanu maintains in 'Tragic Pathos. Pity and Fear in Greek Philosophy and Tragedy' (2012), perhaps it would be worth asking why Athena, goddess of wisdom, carries on her shield the apotropaic image of the Gorgon called gorgoneion? What relationship can this image have with what the goddess represents? Is it a form of defense against the terror of reality? http://www.circulobellasartes.com/ This conference, by Ana Carrasco Conde, philosopher and professor of Philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid, presents a different reading of ancient philosophy using the Gorgon as its emblem, rather than Athena.
