■ Euljiro, an old alley in Seoul, has recently been gathering young people in the declining area. Euljiro 3-ga, a time-stopping landscape right next to the forest of buildings in downtown Seoul. Since the Japanese colonial period, when factories were built to produce daily necessities, the alleys of Euljiro 3-ga have served as a mecca for industries such as lighting, tools, tiles, and ceramics, as well as precision machinery and metalworking. As it is an old downtown area, there are old stores such as restaurants and shoe stores that are over 50 years old. Meanwhile, the glory of Euljiro, where people once said they could make tanks if they brought a blueprint, has been declining since the 1980s. However, young people have recently been flocking to the maze-like alleys of Euljiro. As young artists and entrepreneurs move into the vacant spaces created by the Euljiro redevelopment project, a wind of change is blowing through Euljiro. Documentary 3 Days captures the harmony between those who preserve the old and the new generations who create new things within it. ■ Euljiro, which has been reduced to an island in the city due to redevelopment efforts for 40 years The alleys of Euljiro 3-ga are located in the heart of Seoul, but the redevelopment efforts that had been promoted since the late 1970s fell through, and in 2006, the area around Euljiro was designated as a redevelopment promotion zone to allow construction of 15 to 20 stories, which made the aging of the buildings even more serious. As a result, the alleys of Euljiro currently look outdated, similar to those of the 1960s and 1970s. As the redevelopment efforts are generally sluggish and the direction is changing to small-scale subdivided development, small business owners such as artisans who have protected the alleys of Euljiro are at risk of leaving. Those who have stayed in the same place for decades are afraid of continuing the history of Euljiro somewhere else. ■ The old future of Seoul, Euljiro being rebuilt by young people The winds of change have been blowing in the outdated alleys of Euljiro for the past 3 to 4 years. The Seoul Metropolitan Government is actively attracting young entrepreneurs to the Maker's Cube in Seun Shopping Mall, which was recently remodeled, and Jung-gu Office is introducing the Euljiro Design Art Project, leasing empty buildings in the Euljiro area and supporting 90 percent of the rent to young artists. Various cultural spaces such as design rooms, studios, and other art creation spaces, as well as cafes, restaurants, and bookstores, are emerging next to the alleys of ironworks in Seun Shopping Mall and Euljiro 3-ga. We closely filmed the spaces in the Euljiro 3-ga area, where new and old heterogeneous cultures and industries are merging and attracting young people, for three days, listened to the dreams and hopes of Euljiro people, and looked for ways to change the future of Euljiro through the stories of Euljiro elders and young artists.
