Laplace's demon was a thought experiment developed in 1814 that postulated that, if there were an entity with superhuman abilities, capable of knowing the position and speed of each particle in the Universe, said being would be able to predict the future and glimpse the past. Pierre-Simon Laplace, starting from the equations of Newton's mechanics, had just laid the foundations, with this supposed demon of infinite knowledge, of causal determinism. The roots of the Cosmos showed us that free will was a simple illusion and that we were all puppets of fate. Throughout the 19th century, this deterministic vision of the past, present and future dominated the world of physics. Until the 20th century, when things changed. In the 1920s, with the entire community focused on laying the foundations of quantum mechanics, the German physicist Werner Heisenberg revolutionized the panorama with his uncertainty principle. He showed that in the quantum world, Laplace's determinism could not reign. Everything was indeterminate. The doors of free will seemed to open again. It seemed like we had killed that Laplace demon.
