WE MADE A DREAM COME TRUE! WE WENT UP THE SERRA DO RIO RASTRO IN A KOMBI MOTORHOME!!! The Serra do Rio do Rastro is considered one of the most challenging and exciting roads in Brazil, with its sharp curves and stunning landscapes!! We left the city of Lauro Muller in Santa Catarina heading to the Santa Catarina mountains, and we are going to climb the Serra do Rio do Rastro with our Kombi motorhome, a dream that is coming true after years of work building our handmade motorhome! The Serra do Rio do Rastro is incredible with its steep climb and 284 breathtaking curves. Climbing a road like this with a Kombi with a 1600 air-cooled engine was not easy at all, it was quite a challenge! Learn about the history of the Serra do Rio do Rastro: It was created in 1759 to be an escape route for the Jesuits, when the Marquis of Pombal banned the priests from the territory. In an attempt to escape the soldiers, the Jesuits of the Seven Towns of the Missions, accompanied by the Guarani Indians, sought an alternative route to the Caminho dos Conventos that went up from the coast further south, where the Serra da Rocinha is today. Thus began the trail, path, or path that would later be called Serra de Tubarão. Soon the drovers who used the Caminho dos Conventos learned about this route and began to use it, as it shortened the journey. Much history passed, thousands of Indians were decimated, villages were born, coal mines were opened and the Caminho do Rio Tubarão was 12 km long until the community of Novo Horizonte. But the drovers continued to use the Serra de Tubarão trail that ran close to the Rio do Rastro, which was very fast-flowing during the rains, but without the rains it was just a river trail. In the mid-19th century, this trail was the only point of connection between the mountainous region of Santa Catarina and the coast, where the commercial centers of Desterro (Florianópolis), Tubarão and São Francisco do Sul had existed since 1700. The mountainous region already had the landing fields of Lages, Curitibanos and Lapa. It was only in 1929 that the trail was widened from 12 km to the “Boca da Serra”, today the Gateway to the Serra Catarinense. However, it was only in 1951 that the “widened trail” began to be transformed into a road, which would connect Novo Horizonte to Bom Jardim da Serra. In 1955, it was already possible to drive cars and small trucks, when everything was fine. And then it was abandoned. But the locals called it Serra do 12 because of the 12 very sharp curves it made. The mountain range was only taken care of again in the 1980s, after all, it was paved with simple concrete made from basalt and sandstone from the region itself, in 1986.
