Arguments everywhere you look: Hinnerk and Jens are at loggerheads over Hinnerk's nephew Arne, who is studying agriculture and has come to Deekelsen to write a term paper. Hinnerk is very proud of him, Jens is rather skeptical: "Skilled farmer, aha! More of a smartass," he thinks to himself. But whenever the topic of term paper comes up, Arne becomes visibly nervous and reacts irritably. Hinnerk sends him to Jens' farm to do some practical research. At first Arne seems very grateful for the distraction, but then he actually behaves so clumsily that he crushes a finger. The next morning Arne is very ill. Hinnerk accuses Jens of having acted negligently. But Dr. Jan Bergmann quickly realizes that Arne's real problem is not his finger. Jan and Maren are having a bad time at home: Brigitte Davis, who took out Maren's loan from the bank, makes an offer to buy the inn. Maren indignantly refuses and is determined to find a bank that will give her a reasonable loan so that she can pay off Mrs Davis's. The Hamburg banker, who comes to Deekelsen and critically examines the situation, finally lets it be known that the country doctor's house would be sufficient as security. With a queasy feeling, Maren puts this suggestion to Jan, who is not at all happy about it: the risk is simply too great. Arguments ensue. When Heinrich collapses from exhaustion, Maren has to make a momentous decision. And Anja and Erik also need to discuss things: Anja's obvious desire for a child upsets Erik. He wants everything to stay as it is.
