On June 22, 1941, fascist Italy, following Germany, declared war on the USSR. Mussolini sent first a corps, then an entire army, over 200,000 men, to the Eastern Front. Their main goal would be to reach the banks of the Volga, a distant, mysterious and mythical river for the Italians. Most of them would not reach their goal. Vainly striving for the banks of the Volga, almost all of them would die, go missing or be captured during the Battle of Stalingrad. Nevertheless, the Germans would consider their Italian allies to be the main culprits of their incredible defeat. Returning to their homeland, the survivors would experience humiliation and shame, and the memory of the defeat in the Battle of Stalingrad would forever change the future of Italy. How the campaign to Russia was imagined by its Italian participants, how fascist propaganda justified its necessity and what stereotypes it instilled about our country, what the participants of the campaign thought about the Volga River and Stalingrad, and how the unattainable goal – the Volga – destroyed Mussolini. Grigory Pryadko spoke about this and much more at the Digital History festival-lecture hall in Kazan. #digitalhistory #egoryakovlev #history #grigorypryadko #mussolini #festivalci The lecture festival is organized with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives Excursions of the "Digital History": https://vk.com/egortrip Support the "Digital History" project: "Sponsr" - https://sponsr.ru/dhistory/ "Boosty" - https://boosty.to/d_history "Sberbank": 4276-5500-7886-1070 "Sberbank MIR": 2202 2068 9507 7811 "Donationalerts" - https://www.donationalerts.com/r/digh...
