The city of Naples, Italy, and Hitachi Rail, a railway operator of Hitachi, Ltd., will begin passenger service on the newly extended Line 6 of the Naples Metro in July. Starting in 2025, 22 new train sets being manufactured by Hitachi Rail at its Italian production facilities, including Naples, will be introduced one after another. Hitachi has been expanding its business in Italy since acquiring Ensemble Bureta, a major Italian railway operator, in 2015. In July 2023, Hitachi announced that it had begun operation of a new subway line, the Blue Line, in Milan, Italy. For Hitachi Rail, Italy has now become a cornerstone country in Europe, alongside the UK, where the company is headquartered. With the completion of its acquisition of the GTS division of French electronics manufacturer Thales, Hitachi aims to expand its railway business throughout Europe in the future.
