The era of spectacle architecture is how architect and professor Luis Fernández-Galiano describes the period that includes the governments of José María Aznar and in which large architectural projects erected as iconic and monumental symbols are inscribed, many of them carried out by internationally renowned authors. The City of Arts and Sciences by Santiago Calatrava, the Guggenheim in Bilbao designed by Frank Gehry or the Kursaal by Rafael Moneo, among others, transformed –often radically– their urban surroundings and landscapes in the form of public buildings such as auditoriums, museums, town halls or stadiums.
