This Wednesday, after 15 months of conflict, the long-awaited agreement was announced. First, informally through the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, who has led the negotiations in recent days. Then, officially through the voice of the prime minister of Qatar: “We hope that this will be the last page of the days of war,” he said. The trigger for the war was the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, when the group murdered 1,200 people inside Israeli territory and captured 251 hostages. Since then, around 48,000 people have been killed, 45,000 of them Palestinians – according to the UN, 75% were women and children. The agreement includes a six-month plan, divided into three stages. The first phase will last six weeks, foresees a complete ceasefire and begins the process of exchanging hostages. In phase two, there will be the release of the remaining hostages and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. The third and final phase determines the beginning of a plan for the reconstruction of the territory. To analyze the circumstances of the agreement – both on the international scene and in Israeli politics – Julia Duailibi interviews Michel Gherman, professor at the Center for Jewish Studies at UFRJ and researcher at the Center for Anti-Semitism Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He explains why Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, is so resistant to the ceasefire and plans the next steps in the attempt to end the war. #thesubject ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello!
