The castle was built by the Scaligeri in the 14th century to defend their territories from the Gonzaga of Mantua. The quadrangular complex included eight towers and was surrounded by a moat. It was remodeled several times by subsequent owners until it became a noble residence. A furious fire destroyed part of it in 1962 and it was restored and recovered by the municipality of Sanguinetto only recently. Many famous people have stayed there: nobles, poets, writers and leaders. We remember: Foscolo, Garibaldi, Francesco Giuseppe, Goldoni and Silvio Pellico who spent a night in the castle's prisons before being taken to Spielberg.
