Abu Ja'far Harun ibn Muhammad, better known as Harun al-Rashid (March 17, 763 or February 16, 766 – March 24, 809) was an Arab caliph from the Abbasid dynasty from September 17, 786 to March 24, 809. He received the nickname al-Rashid ("Righteous") not from his descendants, but from his father, Caliph al-Mahdi, when he was declared heir to the throne. The reign of Harun al-Rashid is usually considered to be the golden age of Islam and the caliphate. At the same time, al-Rashid's reign was marked by separatist uprisings in Daylam, Syria and other areas. In 796, he moved his court from Baghdad to er-Raqqa.
