The Bernina Express fights its way over 196 bridges and through 55 tunnels from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy. Its route takes it through deep valleys, wild gorges, and over the eternal ice of the Graubünden Alps. It was not until 1890 that railway engineers opened up the southeast of Switzerland. A daring undertaking, as the forces of nature have made the route dangerous to this day. The Bernina Express fights its way over 196 bridges and through 55 tunnels from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy. Through deep valleys, wild gorges, and over the eternal ice of the Graubünden Alps. It was not until 1890 that railway engineers opened up the southeast of Switzerland. The unique and daring route through the Albula Valley and over the Bernina Pass has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. The viaducts and tunnels are stone witnesses to the pioneering spirit of the railway engineers and the courage of the railway workers and miners who, despite the lurking dangers, laid the silvery shimmering strip of rail through the mountains down to the Val Poschiavo. Invisible at first glance: the threat to the route posed by global warming. Significant changes are occurring, especially in the high mountains. Even today, the train driver must be vigilant on this route, because then as now, the weather and the mountains are always good for a surprise. Extreme weather events such as heavy snowfall, flooding or winter storms in the mountains can, under certain circumstances, cause entire mountains to slide - and in the worst case, threaten the railway line. The documentary accompanies the "Bernina Express" on its four-hour journey from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy. Breathtaking aerial shots tell the story of an architectural masterpiece by railway engineers in an unpredictable landscape.
